Example Tutorial
Below is an example of a MARXAN tutorial provided in conjunction with ESRI ArcView 3x software. For more information regarding this tutorial go to our Resources page.

ArcView (3x) Tutorial: programs and data
A1) Copy the file TNC_marxan_tutorial_arcview3.zip onto your computer and unzip it onto the root hard drive (straight onto C or D hard drive). A folder called marxan will unzip, and it should contain the marxan program and three folders named inputs, inputs_2, outputs and TNC_tutorial_data. The inputs folder should contain six dat files, the inputs_2 and the outputs folder should be empty. The TNC_tutorial_data folder should contain six further folders, the pu folder contains the planning unit shapefile, the targets folder contains biodiversity target shapefiles, the scripts folder contains several scripts, the pa folder contains the protected area shapefile, the land folder contains the coastal outline shapefile and the tables folder should be empty. Marxan must always be installed with a very short path name eg c:/marxan. Do not place it within a long pathname such as within the 'my documents' folder.

A2) Although MARXAN is included with the tutorial data, we recommend you first download the software from The Ecology Centre at the University of Queensland: http://www.ecology.uq.edu.au/?page=20882&pid=. Registering for the software allows the developers to track its use and give the user the opportunity to sign up for a MARXAN email list serve.

A3) ArcView should already be installed on your computer. See http://www.esri.com/software/arcview/index.html for information about ArcView, and http://www.conservationgis.org/aaesrigrants.html ffor information concerning ESRI's conservation program, through which ArcView may be made available to conservation organizations.

A4) Open ArcView GIS and open a new View (that will automatically be named View1) by clicking on the new button in the project window.

A5) From the File menu choose save project as, and save the project as TNC_exercise_1.apr in the 'TNC_tutorial_data' folder.

A6) Click on View 1, then click on the add theme button Theme Button. Navigate to and double click on the c:\marxan\TNC_tutorial_data\pu\tnc_mxn_pu shapefile. Click on the add theme button again and navigate to the c:\marxan\TNC_tutorial_data\targets folder. Hold the shift key and single click on the target shapefiles (tnc_marine_targets.shp and tnc_terr_targets.shp) and then click the OK button. Turn all the themes on by clicking the checkmark next to their names in the table of contents. They should display using the legend files in the same folder. If they do not, double click on the theme name in the table of contents and choose the options to display using unique value legend type based on the name field. Each target should be displayed in a different color, and the name should appear in the table of contents of the view similar to the view shown below. Save the project.
